Dear Colleages,
If you know of anybody who may be interested in that position lead him/she know
Thanks,
Isaac Salazar-Ciudad
University of Helsinki, Institute of Biotechnology: PhD position in Evolutionary Biology,
Developmental Biology and Systems Biology
We are looking for a student, preferably a biologists, to start a grant for a PhD on the
interrelationship between the evolution of gene networks, development and the phenotype:
- Simulation of the evolution of the genotype-phenotype map of complex organs based on
development.
or/and
- Quantitative study of the patterns of phenotypic variation across ontogeny and phylogeny
or/and
- Computational models of pattern formation and morphogenesis in animal development
One of the current challenges of evolutionary biology is to understand how genetic
variation leads to specific morphological variation (the genotype-phenotype map) and how
that process affects the direction of morphological change in evolution. Our group is
devoted to address this question by using gene network models.
Programming skills or a willingness to acquire them is required.
The project involves spending some time with collaborators in Barcelona and close
collaboration with Jukka Jernvall's group
(http://www.biocenter.helsinki.fi/bi/evodevo/index.shtml).
The exact topic of the theses would be discussed in detail during interview.
of morphological variation. Nature. 2010 Mar 25;464(7288):583-6.
The University of Helsinki is a public University that has regularly been ranked among
Europe's 10 to 15 best universities on worldwide ranking lists of research universities.
Some 470 doctorates are completed annually and nearly 10,000 scientific articles or
monographs are published yearly by the university's researchers.
Dear colleague, could you please post the attached pdf in your
institute for postdoc applications on Chordate Functional Evo-Devo in
Barcelona (call deadline November 20th).
Thanks

Dear colleagues,
The discussions at the next summit of the European Union heads of state
or government, which is scheduled for 22 and 23 November, will be
decisive in determining the EU research budget for the next seven years.
Several Member States are demanding severe cuts on the total EU budget
and research will have to compete with other policy priorities.
This is a time when we, the scientific community, should act together
and make our case to protect research funding, including that of the
European Research Council (ERC), from cuts. Decisions will be prepared
in discussions among politicians at the national level. All of us must
look for opportunities to affect these decisions and send a strong
signal to the heads of state or government.
An open letter signed by European Nobel laureates has been published in
top European newspapers this week. The impact of this letter will be
increased if it is followed by a mobilization of the national scientific
communities. To keep the momentum going, an online petition has been
launched:
http://www.no-cuts-on-research.eu
I would like to ask you to sign it and to encourage all your colleagues
to do likewise. Note that in the past, less than 30 000 scientists
signed the largest petition for a European scientific cause compared to
the hundreds of thousands of signatures on petitions from other groups
of society. We must do better than that.
This action is coordinated by the Initiative for Science in Europe
(ise(a)i-se.org; www.initiative-science-europe.org), of which EMBO is a
member. Please contact Wolfgang Eppenschwandtner, Executive Coordinator
of the ISE if you have any questions or suggestions.

Dear all,
Does anybody have or now someone that has a needle puller that can pull
quartz needles for microinjection (something like Sutter Instruments P2000
laser based micropipette puller (
http://www.sutter.com/products/product_sheets/p2000.html ) that we could
use?
Thank you very much!

POST-DOC FELLOWSHIP APPLICATIONS
in Chordate Fuctional Evo-Devo and Genomics
University of Barcelona
Department of Genetics
Our new group on the field of Functional Evo-Devo and Genomics on
Chordates is looking for candidates to apply for forthcoming post-doc
FELLOWSHIP from Spanish and European funding programs (see below).
Candidates need to have a competitive CV to successfully apply for the
fellowship. Experience in Molecular Genetics, Transgenesis and
Developmental Biology, and (or) Background in Bioinformatics, and
Comparative Genomics will be positively considered.
Our main research interest is to understand the impact of gene losses
on the evolutionary diversification of mechanisms of development in
chordates. Our work focuses on comparative approaches between
vertebrates (zebrafish), urochordates and cephalochordates. Our main
subject of study is Oikopleura dioica, a new emergent urochordate
model within our own phylum, with the smallest metazoan genome size
known so far, and with an outstanding amount of gene losses (Denoeud
et al., Science, 2010).
Interested candidates, please send a brief letter of interest and a CV
in ONE single pdf file to Cristian Cañestro (canestro(a)ub.edu)
Interested candidates for future POST- or PRE-DOCTORAL applications,
please feel free to contact too.
